Ellinwood Storm and Flood
- May 4-6, 2007
Here
are some photos that were taken during the recent storm and flood in
Ellinwood and the central Kansas area. The storm started on Friday
night, May 4, 2007 and lasted through Sunday, May 6. Ellinwood
residents, mainly north of 7th street, woke up to the flooding early on
Sunday morning, caused by about 15 inches of rain in the two days.
(Goodbye drought) There was flooding near the golf course also on
Sunday, closing down the highway. Flooding also was extensive east
of Ellinwood, through Chase and Lyons, and on the roads to
Hutchinson. Those highways and roads were also closed. You
will see some photos of the damage from a tornado that passed the
western edge of Ellinwood and headed north to Claflin. That
tornado probably caused the damage to the St. Peter & Paul church,
five miles north of town. The tornado sirens sounded many times
throughout the evening hours on both Friday and Saturday nights as
tornados passed close by Ellinwood. Even with all the damage, Ellinwood was
very lucky to still be standing, considering the damage to Greensburg,
with 95% of that town being destroyed by an F5 tornado.
The
photos of the flooding were taken on Sunday morning. The
photos of the golf course were taken on Monday after the water had
already receded and was no longer blocking the highway. The photos
of the Arkansas River were taken several days later, on Thursday, after
the water had already gone down several feet. It's nice to
see water in the river again.
